Do you think you received a suspicious message from us?
Not sure whether a message is genuine? It could be phishing. Below you can find how to recognise emails, phone calls and websites from Nationale‑Nederlanden, and what to do if something does not feel right.
When cybercriminals try to obtain your personal or login details, this is called phishing. It often happens via email, but it can also occur by phone, text message, WhatsApp or fake websites. Cybercriminals use your details to access your account and steal your money.
Phishing emails
What is a phishing email?
A phishing email is used by cybercriminals to obtain your security codes. These emails often look very similar to messages you normally receive from Nationale‑Nederlanden. So make sure you stay alert.
How do you recognise a phishing email?
Every phishing email looks different. Pay close attention if an email refers to nn.nl or asks for your details.
If you receive an email from Nationale‑Nederlanden, be extra cautious if it shows one or more of the following signs:
- Poor language or spelling mistakes
- A request to act urgently
- A request to update your personal details
- A link to a website where you need to log in
- A threat that your account will be blocked if you do not respond
- Your email provider or spam filter marks it as ‘spam’
- The sender’s address does not match the organisation’s website
Please note: we may sometimes ask you to check your details, but unfortunately cybercriminals do this as well.
What we will never ask you
- Your login details. These are personal and belong to you
- To log in to the NN App or mijn.nn via a link
- To change your login details via email

In addition to phishing via email, cybercriminals may also call you. They may tell you that your money is not safe in your savings account and ask you to transfer it to another account.
Sometimes your screen may even show the phone number of Nationale‑Nederlanden. This trick is called spoofing.
How do you recognise phishing by phone?
The caller may:
- Ask you to “secure” your money
- Claim there is suspicious activity on your account
- Talk about a “secure account” or “vault account”
- Ask for your personal details or access to your computer
- Say someone will visit you to collect and block your card

1. Check if you are visiting a secure website

2. Keep your software up to date
Make sure your phone, computer, laptop or tablet always has the latest updates. Check every month if a new update is available.
- Install software and security updates
- Do not install illegal and/or unknown software

- Install antispyware software
- Install a firewall
- Use the latest version of your browser
- Use a spam filter
- Only download apps from official app stores

Do you use a wireless network (Wi-Fi)? Secure the connection and make sure your password is difficult to guess.
4. Only use your own devices when logging into a personal environment
Are you logging in or using online banking in a personal environment? Only do this on your own device and on a trusted network. Do not use free wireless networks (hotspots), and do not log in on public computers. You do not know how secure they are.
5. Use secure login details
Does the website you visit have a personal environment? Make sure you use secure login details. Here is how:
- Never write down your login details or share them in an email.
- Is someone calling you on behalf of Nationale Nederlanden? Do not share your details. We only ask for your username if you contact us yourself.
- Change your passwords regularly and never use the same password for multiple websites.
- Use a strong password that is not easy to guess, with a combination of numbers, lowercase and uppercase letters, and punctuation.

The password in the email will no longer be usable.

Would you like to log in to mijn.nn on your mobile phone? You can open the NN App directly from mijn.nn. You will no longer be able to log in with your username or password. This makes it more difficult for cybercriminals to access your data. Read more about logging in with the NN App.
Secure banking
You can bank online safely in mijn.nn. This is how we ensure that:
- On nn.nl, you have a secure connection. This protects your data.
- Your Nationale-Nederlanden savings or investment account has a linked counter account. If you withdraw money, it will automatically be transferred to this counter account. If someone gains access to your account, you do not need to worry: they can only transfer money to your registered counter account.
- In mijn.nn, you can only change your counter account if the new account is in your name. Someone with malicious intent cannot benefit from changing your counter account. If you change your counter account, you must make a deposit from the new account. Until then, your savings account will be blocked.
